Five cities on the same stretch of the northwest metro, five different answers to one question: can the dumpster go in the street?
The short answer on Boulder County dumpster permits: put the container on your own driveway whenever you can. Louisville is the exception, because it wants a City permit even on private property. Erie offers a free street permit. Lafayette wants a licensed, bonded contractor on any right-of-way permit. Superior treats an unpermitted street dumpster as a nuisance. Firestone, just over the line in Weld County, treats it as a street obstruction that needs a traffic control plan.
TL;DR
Driveway first. In Louisville, get the Temporary Use Permit before delivery even on a driveway. In Erie, a street bin needs a free Town permit filed 5 days ahead. In Lafayette, Superior, and Firestone, a street bin means a real right-of-way process. Check the city page for your address before the truck is booked.
The Five Cities Side by Side
| City | Private driveway | Street or right-of-way |
|---|---|---|
| Louisville | Temporary Use Permit required; up to 30 days in 12 months | Public Works ROW permit: $75 base fee + $75/week for a roll-off |
| Lafayette | No ROW permit | ROW permit; licensed contractor + $5,000 street-cut bond |
| Superior | Town asks for driveway placement | Nuisance unless expressly permitted; Public Works Dumpster Permit |
| Erie | No permit | Free Town permit, 5 days ahead, up to 60 days + 60 |
| Firestone | No street permit | Town permit with traffic control plan and map |
Louisville: A Permit Even on the Driveway
Louisville requires a Temporary Use Permit for a dumpster, roll-off, or portable storage unit on private property. You submit it through the City portal with a site plan that shows the container, the streets, and the alleys. It runs no more than 30 days in any 12-month period. Roll-off and dumpster permits can be renewed in 30-day extensions when the job has an active building permit. Containers cannot sit in a vision clearance area.
Street placement is a separate Public Works job. The City right-of-way permit page lists a $75 base fee and $75 per week for storage of materials such as a roll-off dumpster. Start before the permit is issued and the fees double. Details: Louisville.
Lafayette: The Contractor Carries the Permit
Lafayette's right-of-way permit page names roll-offs, dumpsters, and storage containers among the items that need a permit under City Code Chapter 105. Every contractor on the permit, including the dumpster company, needs a City of Lafayette contractor license and a $5,000 street-cut bond. Council approved an updated ROW fee schedule on July 9, 2026. Ask your provider if it is licensed in Lafayette before you plan on the street. Details: Lafayette.
Superior: Keep It Off the Street
Superior Municipal Code Sec. 7-1-90 lists dumpsters, roll-offs, and trash bins on public rights-of-way as a nuisance unless the Town expressly permits them. Town code enforcement has asked contractors and residents to move them onto private driveways. Public Works publishes a Dumpster Permit application; call 303-499-3675 for current requirements. Details: Superior.
Erie: Free, but File Early
Erie's Dumpster, Storage, Landscape, Roll-Off Permit is free. File it with the Town Clerk at least 5 days before placement on a street, alley, or other right-of-way. It runs up to 60 days and can be extended once for another 60 if approved before it expires. No permit is needed on a private driveway. The Town also warns that an HOA can set stricter removal deadlines, and those still apply. Details: Erie.
Firestone: A Street Obstruction Permit
Firestone Municipal Code 12.12.010 makes it unlawful to obstruct a street, alley, sidewalk, or other right-of-way with material without a Town permit. The application goes to the Town Clerk with a traffic control plan, dates and hours, and a map. The Engineering Division also runs right-of-way permits for street occupancy and traffic control. Call the Town to confirm which one your placement needs. Details: Firestone.
When Not to Bother With the Street
Skip street placement when the driveway fits the container. On most single-home jobs in these five cities the driveway is faster, cheaper, and keeps the HOA quiet. The street makes sense when there is no driveway, the driveway is too short, or the crew needs the bin within reach of a tear-off and the Town agrees.
